A birch tree near Flagstone Bog had been looking haggard for a year or so and did not leaf out last spring. I cut it down a couple of weeks ago, for firewood, and discovered a lightning strike had been responsible for the tree's demise, as illustrated by unusual mottling in the trunk. Normally, distinct rings would be visible.

ReplyDeleteThere was a damaged area a fair way up the tree, which I thought was probably a gall. When I had a look at the tree on the ground, I found it was a gaping, charred bowl in the trunk.
